Check out this great video
It's a two part program.
First week we are staying at a family Villa in a picturesque Italian village and collecting materials: plain air sketches and photographs.
The next 2 weeks we are working on a final composition back in Washington. The paintings will be exhibited at the gallery alongside with plein air sketches.
This is a family villa located in the village of
Seiano in the bay of Naples. It’s situated close to the edge of the cliff and overlooking the Mediterranean sea and mount Vesuvius.
The Villa is filled with artefacts. Rooms have French doors opening to an arched terrace.
A trail to the public beach starts at the villa. Distance 0.7 miles, elevation 360 feet.
We feel incredibly lucky to discover this opportunity! The villa is tucked away from super touristed areas and yet it is so close to many fantastic destinations. It’s a perfect home-base: Pompeii (30 min by train), Sorrento (30 min by train), Amalfi Coast and Naples (40 min by car).
Some rooms have two single beds and some have one double bed. There are several bathrooms at the villa, a kitchen and a living room. Simple breakfast is provided: bread, eggs, coffee, yogurt. There is another terrace where we can congregate. We would have to bring our own shampoo/conditioner and beach towels. Bath towels are provided.
I welcome you to this historic villa in one of the most beautiful places in the world!”
This is the hotel in Naples where we would like to stay upon arrival to Italy
https://labaiadipartenope.com.
It looks like this hotel does not have rooms available any more. Please try to book something nearby.
We must see this collection while in Naples. The museum is filled with paintings from the 13th to the 18th centuries including major works by Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, El Greco, Giovanni Bellini, Simone Martini, Masaccio, Lorenzo Lotto, Giorgio Vasari, Jacob Philipp Hackert and many others. The museum is by far the best place to see paintings of the Neapolitan School, with large holdings of Jusepe de Ribera, Luca Giordano, the Neapolitan Caravaggisti and many others (see List of works in the Galleria Nazionale di Capodimonte). Much of the ground floor is taken up by part of the magnificent Farnese collection of classical, mostly Roman, monumental sculpture.
Only 11 miles from the Villa, this incredible site is very vast (5 sq mi). Please wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen.!
The Internet connection is essential for any international travel. The Villa has WiFi but we also have to have a reliable connection between each other from the moment we land in Italy. WhatsApp is a must. We should have an international plan via our US phone company or a digital SIM card that covers Italy.
We have to pack super light and compact.
My understanding is that many vendors in Italy prefer cash over credit cards. We can bring some cash with us. We can also withdraw cash from ATMs with a limit of 500 euros daily.
Please contact your bank and let them know that you are traveling before we leave.
John Steinbeck when he visited in 1953 wrote “Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.”The houses seem to be sitting on top of each other as they cascade down the slope. “The artist Paul Klee described it as “The only place in the world conceived on a vertical rather than a horizontal axis.”
